ANDREA ZITTLE
LAY MY LAND,
“ANDRÉA ZITTEL IS MOST CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH THE REMARKABLE UTOPIAN
STRUCTURES SHE CALLS ‘WAGON STATIONS’ WHICH EXPLORE WHAT HUMANS NEED FOR
SURVIVAL IN DIFFERENT WAYS. ZITTEL’S PROJECTS ARE DEEPLY ROOTED IN HER DAILY
LIFE AND DELVE INTO ARCHITECTURE, PAINTING, PHOTOGRAPHY, DESIGN, TEXTILES,
NEEDLEWORK AND COOKING. AT THE BEGINNING OF THE LAST DECADE ZITTEL FOUNDED A-Z
WEST IN THE REMOTE CALIFORNIA DESERT AND BEGAN CREATING THE ‘WAGON STATIONS’
UNITS IN WHICH EVERYDAY ACTIVITIES SUCH AS SLEEPING, EATING, COOKING AND
SOCIALISING COULD BECOME ARTISTIC ACTIONS”
ZITTLES WORK WAS VERY DIFFERENT TO ANYTHING I HAD SEEN BEFORE. I WAS
STRUCK BY THE EXTENSIVE DEVELOPMENT OF ARCHITECTURE AND GREAT INTEREST AND
RESEARCH INTO CREATING A COLLECTION OF DIFFERENT STATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH
VARIOUS PLACES AND SETTINGS AND NEEDS. WHEN FIRST SEEING THEM, IT LOOKED LIKE A
CAMPING SITE WITHIN THE EXHIBITION, LITTLE STATIONS SET UP EVERYWHERE AS IF
THEY WERE CARAVANS OF SOME SORT. LOOKING INSIDE THEY WERE HEAVILY DECORATED AND
HAD MANY SYMBOLIC ITEMS AND SYMBOLS ASSOCIATED WITH THE WAGONS THEME. I WANTED
ONE MYSELF. SOMETHING ABOUT THEM BROUGHT ME BACK TO MY CHILD HOOD IN WHICH I
WOULD CREATE MY OWN ‘STATIONS’ WITH PILLOWS AND DUVETS FOR FUN AND
ENTERTAINMENT, THERE WAS SOMETHING CREATIVE AND INNOCENT ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
THAT WAS VERY REFRESHING. THERE WAS ALSO A VIDEO INCORPORATED INTO THE
EXHIBITION, ABOUT ZITTEL’S EVERYDAY LIFE AND REGIME, I WASN’T SO STRUCK ABOUT
THIS, ALTHOUGH PEOPLE CROWED ROUND WITH INTEREST THE WAGON STATIONS AND LARGE
INSTALLATIONS WHERE MUCH MORE INTERESTING AND I THINK THEM ALONE COULD HAVE
BEEN ENOUGH TO MAKE THIS EXHIBITION AS INFLUENTIAL AS I FOUND IT.
